More than hockey, when the new Red Wings arena opens in 17 months it stands to become the entertainment center in Detroit -- and one of the premiere entertainment districts in the country.
MLive toured the arena site Wednesday, March 9, and got an overview of plans to create multiple entertainment venues designed to draw people into the city. The project is far bigger than just a home for Detroit's NHL team.
Construction update
Crews are on schedule to finish the new Red Wings arena in 2017. They plan to begin construction of the massive roofing structure next week with the roof itself beginning to go on this fall. (See updated construction pics in the photo gallery above.)

Around 300 crew members are on-site each day working six days a week. Many of the crews are Detroit-based companies. (Watch the video below to see a view of center ice in the new arena.)

Arena naming
The new Red Wings arena will have a new name in two months time. Stay tuned.

Entertainment galore
The massive construction project, called "The District," will connect Detroit's Midtown and Downtown areas with 50 blocks of restaurants, bars, parks, businesses and new homes, according to Olympia Development officials.
During Wednesday's tour, Tom Wilson, Olympia Entertainment Pres. & CEO said the goal of The District is to bring people to the area well before games or events. There will be six restaurants and seven clubs in the arena alone. The adjacent outdoor plaza will host events and concerts before the actual concerts and events start inside the arena.
The plaza will be a place to tailgate and the huge screen will make for a great gathering place for fans to watch games. The plaza will have room for hundreds of people.
The plan is to have around 100 to 150 events at the outdoor plaza each year, officials said.
Underneath the plaza
Forty feet underneath the outdoor plaza will be the Red Wings practice ice rink. It will also be the rink used by the Little Caesars Hockey Club. The main ice rink is also being built underground, along with a lot of other aspects of the new arena. The entrance to the arena building itself will be on ground level.

Inside the arena
For the fans, the seats will be about two inches bigger than the seats at The Joe. The rows will also be spread further apart. It's all about comfort. The lower bowl will be where most of the seats are located, making for great views and up-close seating throughout the arena.

The upper sections are also not too far from the ice, making for great views no matter where you sit. There will also be various other places to watch a game, including the clubs and the gondola seating high up over the ice for a unique perspective. Tom Wilson compared it to sitting on top of the Green Monster at Fenway Park.
For the players, the locker rooms will be four times the size they are at The Joe. They hope is updated amenities will better support the team and help draw high-ticket free agents.
Suites
The luxury suites sold out in 40 days. They each seat 30 people and hold around 40. They are twice the size of the suites at The Joe and The Palace. One reason for the increase in size is there are no restrooms inside the suites. They've been moved nearby in the hallways. Each suite can also be used for meetings and other events. They feature five custom screens. (Take a brief tour of a suite in the video below.)

The scene
The arena will be surrounded by new buildings. The concourse will be three times larger than the Joe Louis Arena concourse. The ceilings will be clear, so it will feel like you are walking around an outdoor concourse area, officials said.

Among the seven clubs inside the arena will include one in which the players will walk by fans on their way to the ice.

Parking
Beginning soon, the parking areas in the blocks behind the Fox Theatre will be paved. Currently they are gravel lots. There will also be new landscaping.
New parking structures will be limited. The goal is to have people park a few blocks away to make Downtown Detroit a more walkable area to attract more people and new businesses.

More places to live
More apartments and housing will be scattered throughout Downtown Detroit, including right in the heart of it all by the new arena. New apartment buildings are planned along Woodward Avenue as well as next to the arena district.

5-star hotel
A new 5-star hotel will be built next to the arena. Why a 5-star? This is the hotel Olympia Entertainment wants opposing teams to stay at, as well as music artists and their crews.

Concerts
Like The Joe, the concert venue will be designed to attract major music acts. Unlike The Joe, access for crews to load and unload will be easier and quicker. There will also be plenty of private areas at the arena for the artists, their families and their staff to make them feel comfortable while they are on the road.
